Handmade/Heartmade - Fluttering Feathers

I love handmade things. Particularly handmade jewellery, but anything handmade really. It's inspiring to see what people can make with their own hands, and I truly appreciate all the effort that goes into one piece.

I believe buying handmade is a great ethical alternative to a lot of the factory-made, mass-produced items out there. There's nothing wrong with things being made in a factory, its just the loose labour laws that can accompany them. Have you ever seen the short film 'The Story of Stuff'? Yeaah.

There's something more special and valuable about owning a handmade piece. We start to care about the origins of products more. It's not just a piece we got on sale for $3 at such-and-such store, it's handmade by a _____-based designer using ______ materials. We become more invested in the product; it becomes a piece of treasure.

Because of my passion for all things handmade, I'm creating a regular feature on this blog. It's called Handmade/Heartmade and it'll be a chance for me to spotlight handmade products and hopefully support their designers. Some weeks the pieces will be chosen based on a theme, and other weeks I might spotlight just one designer that I love.

My first Handmade/Heartmade spotlight is all about feathers! I found these Leather Feather Earrings (#3) on Etsy a while back and since then have been keeping an eye out on all feathery goods.
